K1600GT Buid 2014 Engine Fault Misfire
« on: December 26, 2017, 05:32:00 PM »
I had accident with bike in 2014. So cannot really service the bike valve clearance since side of head bolts are grinded to minimum on tar.
So bike had just home service which is change oil and oil filter.
Bike has 18000km on odo. But for a while I got misfire. Intermittent. Sometimes on start when cold. Sometimes when riding. Sometimes when start from hot (warm)
Got myself a GS911-wifi and downloaded following engine fault data
Fault Codes : 1
|
21FE52 : Ignition coil 2, 5th in firing order, output open circuit Currently present : NO Engine warning light (MIL) : NO Frequency count : 52
Logistic(Healing) count : 39
..Fault Code History :
....Record number : 1
....Odometer : 15700.0 km
....ABS time : 2347249
....Engine speed : 1000.0 rpm
....Engine temperature : 23.6 °C
....Battery voltage : 13.90 V
....Ignition voltage : 13.83 V
....Record number : 2
....Odometer : 15700.0 km
....ABS time : 2347263
....Engine speed : 966.5 rpm
....Engine temperature : 26.1 °C
....Battery voltage : 13.90 V
....Ignition voltage : 13.75 V
....Record number : 3
....Odometer : 17985.0 km
....ABS time : 10644326
....Engine speed : 2236.5 rpm
....Engine temperature : 66.3 °C
....Battery voltage : 13.97 V
....Ignition voltage : 13.89 V

Ok what does that mean. How do I count the pistons? No 1 on left if I sit on the bike?
Any advice or tip would help a lot.

Hello Radian, I believe the left most cylinder is #1 and the firing order is 1,5,3,6,2,4 making the 2nd cylinder from the left the fifth fired one.
In regards to your accident, I believe you mean the valve cover bolts not the head bolts are damaged? Not sure how this is possible without destroying the valve cover. perhaps you can explain this better.
The cover bolts are only at 10 nm so they could be easily extracted by most any experienced mechanic. perhaps take it in to someone and get that done as it will be required before long anyway.

New to the forum and using the GS-911. I am having the same error on a 2012 K1600GTL (except my error is 21FE22 vs 21FE52). I believe (based on youtube videos), Cylinder number 1 is on the right side (when sitting on the bike, disagreeing with the previous post). That would make Cylinder 5 second from the left (which agrees with the previous post).

I am frustrated because I just had the bike in the shop a month ago and they replace the coil on cylinder 2 (I did not have GS-911 yet so did not get the error code).

Any advice on coil replacement would be helpful. Not sure I really want to spend $1000 on new coils for a bike that has 23K miles.

I know this reply is late but I just got my GS-911 wifi and I have the same issues with engine misfires. The firing patter is 1-5-3-6-2-4. I had coil 2 and 4 that were failing and if you look at the report I believe coil 4 is cylinder 4 but 6th in firing order. Coil 2 is cylinder 5 but is the 2nd in the firing order. I wish the firmware reporting was clearer. Why can't it report which cylinder is misfiring without the notes such as coil 2 is cylinder 5 or cylinder 2 left on a boxer. BMW replaced coils on cylinders 4 and 5 and after getting my bike back I got 3 hits on coil 2 within 20 miles. BMW said they trusted their 5k dollar diagnostic reader over a 400 dollar tester. Don't know what to do after paying about 600 dollars and still have an engine fault light on.

Do not confuse cylinder numbering with firing order numbering.  They are different.

Cylinders are traditionally numbered from left to right, when viewing then from the rider seat.  So cylinder No:1 is on the very left, the clutch lever side.  No:6 would be on the very right, throttle side.

The firing order is the sequence in which they fire.  They do not fire in cylinder sequence, ie. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.  The first cylinder to fir is the one on the very left (No: 1)  The next cylinder that fires is not cylinder 2 but cylinder 5, the 2nd from the right.

Cylinder number: |     1     |     2     |     3     |     4     |     5     |     6     |

Firing Order:        |     1st  |     5th  |     3rd  |     6th  |     2nd  |     4th  |

I believe you're absolutely correct on the cylinder and firing order. I just don't like how the GS-911 reports it. BMW diags tells you which cylinder is missing. Simple and you don't have any possiblities of making a mistake. Thanks for the response.

Coil number and cylinder number are synonymous.  Looking at the highlighted portion of your comment above, you are correct in saying that coil 4 is cylinder 4 and 6th in firing order.  How then do you in the next sentence change the complete logic and state that coil 2 is cylinder 5?  Coil 2 is NOT cylinder 5.  Coil 2 is cylinder 2, but firing 5th in the sequence.

It is actually quite simple.  Just ignore the "Xth in firing order"

In your case you had coils 2 and 4 failing.  So that would be cylinders 2 and 4.  i.e. 2nd from left and 4th from left.

I does look like it's not logical but here's my logic. In the printout if a cylinder number is not mentioned than coil # is cylinder #. BMW replaced the coils for cylinder 4 and 5. My print out said coil 4 and then coil 2 (cylinder 5). I don't like the report the GS-911 gives when reporting a bad coil because it leaves too much for interpretation in my opinion. The BMW mechanic said thery're diagnostic tool from BMW reported cylinders 4 and 5. I should write Mark Blomer of Hex Code again and ask for clarification again. His email is tfemark@gmail.com.

Oh by the way coil 4 does say in the report it's 6th in the firing order so it is cylinders 4 and 5.

Can you post a copy of said report from BMW?

They didn't give me one I'm taking him for his word.

Here's my printout. Coil 4 6th in firing order.. cylinder 4,  coil 2 (cyclinder 5) BMW is right. Just wish the GS-911 would just say cylinder 4 and 5, it would be much clearer.

They didn't give me one I'm taking him for his word.

Here's my printout. Coil 4 6th in firing order.. cylinder 4,  coil 2 (cyclinder 5) BMW is right. Just wish the GS-911 would just say cylinder 4 and 5, it would be much clearer.

Your report does not say "coil 2 (cyclinder 5)"

It says "coil 2 in firing order (cylinder 5 ... "

I don't understand what there is to get confused about.

I understand that but when it's the first time I ever saw the report it was misleading to me. I get it now I just wish it would say the cylinder at fault that's all. Have a great day and happy holidays!
