ERROR data
« on: October 15, 2017, 10:18:27 PM »
Not sure if this is the right place to post this..  But here goes:
I am a newbie here and I just tried to connect my GS911 to my 2014 1200RT.  Followed the instructions and got the device to connect from usb and find the wifi all good.  I then moved the gs911 to the bike and connected.  it beeped and all indications seems to say its connected.  I then went and connected to the web site and choose the R1200rt for my BMW.  it then gave me a list of things to choose from. I tried to get any kind of read from anything and the only thing it returns is an error.   Could not retrieve data from interface.  status did not change with time.  can anyone tell me what I am dong wrong?  Thanks

update.. I think I was using the wrong version 1707.1 instead of .2.  Still not sure how to hook this thing up.  Does the gs911, once connected to the bike,  need to be also connected to a laptop via usb?  or do I talk to the gs911 via wifi at that point?

Hello Pencile, yes plug the GS 911 (wifi?) in to the laptop with supplied cable. With a smart phone you can also perform diagnostics via wifi when you have the app.

Yes, The software runs from the hexcode site when using a PC but the app runs wifi from phone to GS911

Ok just one more stupid question, after watching the videos, does the phone app carry all the functionality as the laptop would?

No it doesn't, it is for roadside emergency use like resetting fault codes. Read page 5 of this http://dl2.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/gs-911wifi_whitepaper.pdf and it will give you some idea of what it is useful for. Practice using it at home and I have a text doc in my phone on how to run it when in the field so I don't screw up when I need it.

My laptop died a few weeks back and I have been putting off buying a new one.  Guess this gives me the motivation now.  I just downloaded the iPhone app and used it to clear 2 ASC and ABS errors.  It seemed to have cleared them... Or at least it said it did.  I will know for sure tomorrow when I ride it to work!!   Thanks for all your help good sir!!

Looks like you are getting the hang of it all right. Clearing a fault is one thing but if the reason for it still exists then it will come back. It is good to do a full scan and save it for future reference once you have your PC issues sorted out.

No it doesn't. When you download the PC software to the Laptop and subsequently connect to the bike via the USB cable it is running from the laptop, not the Hexcode site.

Yes you are correct Mike, it is the wifi utility that needs an internet connection.
The PC software has more functions than the smartphone app so you are going to want to get that new laptop Pencile.

Hello Pencile, yes plug the GS 911 (wifi?) in to the laptop with supplied cable. With a smart phone you can also perform diagnostics via wifi when you have the app.

There is no need to "plug the GS911 into the PC with supplied cable".

Once you have moved the unit from USB to WiFi, you can connect to it via WiFi.  Simply load the GS911 WiFi utility on your PC.  It will scan for the GS911 and once it appears in the "Detected Devices" list you can click on "Open browser for selected device"

If you are using the PC software, you will need to click on "Tools" then "Setup" and change the connection method from USB to WiFi.  Click on "Discover" and it will scan for the device.  Click on "Test interface" to test the connection.

The basic software is loaded on the GS911 WiFi, and can be accessed without an active internet connection.  For more thorough testing you will need an internet connection as that functionality uses cloud services. A PC with an active internet connection is recommended.

Be aware that most smartphones will only allow one connection at a time.  Connecting via WiFi to the GS911 will terminate the internet connection on the smartphone.  ie. you cannot connect to 2 networks at the same time.

I'm not the best with all the computer/wifi/internet troubleshooting and I totally missed the usb to wifi switching on the PC software. I have been trying different scenarios and this is what I've found, please correct me on anything I have wrong or have missed.

Wifi Utility (1702.1)
Usb cable to PC for updates, wifi configuration, registration.
Wifi to PC for diagnostics.
Must have active internet connection.

PC Software (1707.2)
usb to PC (tools/setup switching) for diagnostics, don't need internet.
Wifi to PC (tools/setup switching) for diagnostics, need active internet connection. (at least I can't make it work without)

If a user had a shop with no internet ( as one poster claimed) then he would need usb, and only the PC software with less then full function would be available.

You said there are more functions with the internet, what are they, without doing a lot of comparing I hope someone that already knows can enlighten.

I haven't included the smartphone app since I am pretty sure I have that figured out.

I'm not the best with all the computer/wifi/internet troubleshooting and I totally missed the usb to wifi switching on the PC software. I have been trying different scenarios and this is what I've found, please correct me on anything I have wrong or have missed.

Wifi Utility (1702.1) (Correct)
Usb cable to PC for updates, wifi configuration, registration. (Correct)
Wifi to PC for diagnostics. (Correct)
Must have active internet connection. (Correct, but only to access cloud services.)

PC Software (1707.2) (Correct)
usb to PC (tools/setup switching) for diagnostics, don't need internet. (Correct)
Wifi to PC (tools/setup switching) for diagnostics, need active internet connection. (at least I can't make it work without) (Need active wifi but internet connectivity not required as all software required is built into the application)

If a user had a shop with no internet ( as one poster claimed) then he would need usb, and only the PC software with less then full function would be available.  (As long as there is an active wifi network, the PC app can be used and will provide 99% (?) functionality)

You said there are more functions with the internet, what are they, without doing a lot of comparing I hope someone that already knows can enlighten. (When using the wifi utility and accessing the "on board" software, only limited functionality id available.  Cloud services provides the additional output and service functions.  Without cloud services, only diagnostics and clearing of fault codes is available.)

I haven't included the smartphone app since I am pretty sure I have that figured out.

Don't confuse Wifi with Internet.  You can have a wifi network without having internet access.
