question out of the box

OK, I am confused, what powers this baby.  Do I need to have it plugged into my laptop to work>  When I unplug it from my laptop the rights all go dark.  What am I missing.  Yea I know I am an idiot, but I just can't figure it out.  Is there a battery I need to install or charge? 

Can I see a more technical manual somewhere?
