Anybody come across the recommended maximum temp allowed

Not sure if there is a maximum recommended temp. I've seen mine go as high as 105c when balancing the TB.

Ok thanks. I use to run VW 1300/1500 /1600 at  200c CHT. with a max of 260c, Most air cooled engines I have come across have RLL  of  500 F [260c]

105 isn't very high, I have seen mine at 150c and that was only 4 segments on the temp gauge. That was started from cold doing TB sync so it didn't have the full hot engine for the old temp to go higher.
