Factory I Level
« on: October 18, 2017, 03:28:45 AM »
I have a 2015 R1200 GS with a current (original) Factory/Actual I Level of K001-15-03-511 and 2015 F700 GS, with K024-15-03-500. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is an update available (from BMW of course) for either of these bikes?

Yes there are updates for both models, the last iLevel I have for K001 is 17-03-502 and K024 is 16-11-500, there are likely further updates as well

Remember the iLevel only tells you the overall bike status level as per the date in the iLevel so 17-3 means 2017 March

Thanks Wayne, I was hoping you would respond.
I have to take the R12 in to the dealer anyway to have the front fork tube recall addressed so I will get the update done also and while I am at it I guess I'll throw the F7 in the trailer to get it done also.
I guess there's no way of knowing what the updates are actually addressing even if asking the dealer, they probably just plug it in and hit "enter" (or something).

No worries, get that fork issue resolved, we had a rider very seriously injured here in Oz, airlifted out etc, denial of responsibility from Da Korp of course

Have seen some pics of people and forks, have inspected mine and no separation so I guess I'm not hard core enough. I save that stuff for the Dual Sport or my Dirtbike.

Just had the R1200 I-Level updated to  K001-17-07-513 (so newer than the one you mentioned Wayne) and it was done for free as it addressed fuel management issues and some other stuff to a degree to be considered covered under warranty (at least in Canada eh). They are not contacting anyone as they will do it (if and) when you bring your bike in for service, or in my case the fork recall. Just a heads up to all.

Also had the F700 done but the Actual I-level still says Not set. Just wondering if anyone knows why this is.

Have also heard that there is a maximum number of undates you can have done. Is this

"Program Count:   2   Program Count Maximum:   1024"

 it?

As always thanks in advance

Pleased to hear they updated the R1200 for free and that you had the fork issue addressed, there is more to that fork issue than BMW admit

Re the F700, it may be that an update was not needed, that the bike was already at the latest which seems to be K024-16-11-500, check what the iLevel is

Re max updates, yes there is a limit and yes you picked the right field to show how many updates and the limit for that ECU. The limit on updates is a combination of how many writes are possible into EEPROM and how much storage space is allocated in EEPROM to store the update history. BMW has always taken a conservative approach to this.

The limitations on max No of writes to an EEPROM is more relevant to the older EEPROMS these days, modern embedded processor ICs used in ECUs have the storage internal and the storage types dont have the limitations of the old days. BMW will also increase the No of updates possible based on in the field experience as they did with the F650GS single BMSC increasing the updates allowable on that ECU to 64

The update history stored in the ECUs is something the GS911 and BMW Dealer level diags systems dont have commands to display, the BMW back room engineers who support the dealers have other software which is able to look at the update history stored in an ECU

They said the update for the F700 was so quick that they didn't even charge me for it.
I auto scanned it when I got home and this is what it says:
Factory I-Level: K024-15-03-500
Actual I-Level: Not set

Does not look right to me, seems an update was not applied but I would need to dig around a bit to confirm it, will put it on my todo list for you

Hi,

Sorry to jump in on this thread but do you have a rough idea of what BMW would charge to update the software.

After reading this thread, I'm assuming mine is in need of updating:

2013 R1200 GSA

Factory I-Level: K024-13-02-500
Actual I-Level: K024-13-02-500

Looks like mine hasn't been done since February 2013 and I don't use my main dealer for servicing as the bike is out of warranty.

UK based.

Cheers,

Mark

No apologies needed Mark, they told me a half hour of shop time. and it seems like yours has never been updated, maybe someone (like Wayne  ::)) can tell you if there is an update available.

It looks to me like the updated iLevel should be K024-16-11-500 for the 2013 R1200 GSA

I got my bike updated about a month ago:

Factory I-Level: K001-15-07-510
Actual I-Level: K001-17-11-502
