Fuel gauge issues

Hi all.

So I am rebuilding a crashed K1600 and its more or less done. Save for the fuel gauge, which always reads "full".

I have seen that the gauge itself is not stuck and moves freely but no matter where I put the floater arm, it reads full...even in the empty position.

Funny thing is that when I disconnect the gauge, the fuel level display disappears on the cluster which seems to tell me the wiring is in place.

Applying my multi meter to read resistance shows that the gauge works in as it shows a steady and almost linear change in resistance through the whole range of movement of the floater.

Any idea what I might be missing?

Hello
I think there is a electronic damping working in the ZFE.
It's like the indicating of fuel level after refilling.
Please wait some minutes with ignition on and fixed floater.

Thank you so much...I have also arrived at the same conclusion....Rode the bike around for a while and I am glad to say that the gauge is working 8) ;D :D :)

Hi Schuppi

I wonder if you can give me some help here.

Have a similar problem with a K1300S that's in our workshop. No reading on the cluster even though I left it with ignition on, for 2 days, straight. Had to even plug a battery charger to keep the battery close to 13V during the procedure. Also cable ties the floater to the max position to ensure there is absolutely no movement.

With the GS911 I can read the "Fuel level sense" voltage and it goes for 0.24V to 0.1/0V as I move the fuel gauge floater so I know the bike sees its working but it has failed to display the fuel level on the dash.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

If there is a floater mounted, please read the measurements
disconnect connector
STVB X9220   Pin 2+3 for low level 87,3Ω - 89,9Ω
STVB X9220   Pin 2+3 for full level 2,6Ω - 4,3Ω

...if I'm right, because there is no wiring diagram :-\

And remember, some of these needs to be driven to show the new level

I have 86.1Ω at low and 3.6Ω at high level so I guess the guage is all ok!

Any other tips?

Yes I checked all.

All segments work on the Instrument cluster (the fuel gauge consists of a number of bars on the left side on the LCD and all the bars lit us when I did the dial test too and all work ok)

Also did the real time values for the Fuel Sense voltage and the values showed a change that was consistent with the floater.

I am at a loss!

Only these two faults in the engine controller.

2 fault codes found:
10116 Gear shift-lever sensor
The fault is currently present.
10313 Exhaust flap servomotor
The fault is currently present.

Surely that wouldn't interfere with the fuel gauge?

Where can you read this? I think RTV in the ZFE, then the datas will not be processed in the Kombi (cluster)
If the RTV are readable in Kombi > ZFE failed :-[

 RTV > real time values

Hi,

Actually I can read the Real Time Values in the ZFE (Central Vehicle Electronics). The "Fuel Sense Voltage" is displayed in the real time values and I just read it as 0.24V and that's with an empty tank. This means ZFE is OK.

The is no possibility to read any real time values in the Kombi (Instrument Cluster except Battery voltage and Ambient Brightness.

Will have the bike ridden around with a full tank to ensure the floater does not move. Hopefully things will resolve. It's very strange though.

Good news!!!

Had the bike ridden about. I think it did less than 50km with the tank FULL (and actually that's the only way to ensure that the floater does not move) and the display is now active again on the cluster.
