Need help with GS-911 3-pin setup
« on: February 15, 2016, 12:36:04 AM »
I've read the FAQs and searched the forums for anyone having this basic problem.  I'm sure the problem is me.  I'd welcome any advice and direction to a thread I have missed.

When I load the GS-911 software, I can read the identification of the engine ECU and every other effort to read codes quickly times out.  Also, while reading the codes, the "light"on the lower right of the screen alternates red and green (connected, disconnected).

I have a 2000 R1100RT and I've also tried my 3-pin GS911 on my brother's 1996 R1100RT with exactly the same result.

I have tried installing and reinstalling the drivers and software on three different Lenovo ThinkPads with the exact same result.  I'm running Windows 7 on each of these ThinkPads.

On several re-installs, I have disabled Symantec antivirus to allow the download and install without Symantec quarantining the code.

My set up checks out okay with these settings:
GS-911 version 1511.2
Checksum: 660E
License date: 08/2015
Version 0.18.0
K-Line 1 status:  ok
Battery voltage 12.66

I have the GS-9111 connected to the 3-pin connector as well as a USB connection on a PC.  I have powered the GS-911 with a cup pack.

I had purchased a 3-pin GS-911 in November 2015, tried to get it to work on multiple bikes and PCs and figured it must be the device.  After receiving a replacement GS-911, I am getting exactly the same results.

Any ideas to solve this would be very welcome.

Clearly a comms problem, possibly power/sleep settings on the Thinkpads, lodge a support ticket with Hexcode they will step you through getting the info they need to analyse the problem, http://www.hexcode.co.za/contact-us-1

Dave, not sure I can contribute to a fix but what is a cup pack, and how are you powering the gs-911 with it? I thought that the USB connection was what powered the game-911.

Hi Dave

Just something I have noticed in the past.

Comms does not and will not work with the bike on the sidestand.

Place the bike on the centrestand and fold the sidestand away.  Also make sure the bike is in neutral and the kill switch is in the "Run" position.

Hope this helps.

Alex, "cup pack"  I meant to write "jump pack".  It's a li-ion 12v battery designed to jump a car.  The GS-911 uses a connector with cigarette lighter adapter on one end and connects to the GS-911 3-pin with the same connector used on modern PC printers.

Gents,
Thank you for the thoughtful responses.  I will open a support ticket.

Oh, the ThinkPad USBs are standard and I've used ThinkPads with VAG-com readers, OBDII readers, external CD drives, memory cards, etc.  They are well behaved.

Thanks again!

Dave

Hex code customer support has told me I need to connect the GS-911 to the motorbike's power and not to an external power pack as I had.  The GS-911 and the power cord share a ground so the power cable must be connected to the bike's power.

I will try this.  Thank you for a very prompt customer support response!
