Hi all. Have been living with this problem for a long time! Several years back I changed the gearing on my F800 gsa dropping one tooth on the coutershaft sprocket from 16 to 15. This makes the bike more rideable off road, and still ok on the road. Ever since doing this the gear indicator goues out when running in 6th gear for a short while. Fault fode on the scan tool is 4482(0x1182). Description is Gear selector sensor, implausable signal or value. Basically, I believe the ECU expects a certain engine rpm and a particular wheel speed that has now changed due to the gearing change.
Does anyone know if it is possible to use the gs911 tool to tell/teach the ecu the new values with the reduced gearing are ok?
I have lived with this problem for years, but during a recent x-country trip it became a problem when my clutch switch got dirty. Since the ecu did not know the gear, it did not recognize neutral, and would not start. Inhad to reset all codes to allow the engine to start while out in the middle of nowhere.
Any suggestions appreciated!
Giff

There is an old thread on this on another forum. It is peculiar to the 2017 bikes when BMW went to throttle by wire. Changing the final drive ratio brings on an error. There was no solution to the issue that I recall.
Hey BMW: No service manual = no new bike.

Reset the adaptations and see whether the issue goes away.

Jughead-
Thanks so much for that tip. I dug into it a little via u-tube videos on resetting adaptations…..looks like it has a chance of fixing the issue as the run phase should pair wheel speed with gear setting…..hopefully RPM also! Need to get the wheels on and roll out to the end of my garage. Will try shortly and report back. I can see I have just scratched the surface of what is possible with this tool. Thanks again for the help    :)

Borgia- yes have run against a walll also, but I still have hope that BMW was not so short sited to not allow changing gearing on a bike designed for offroad.   :-\

Btw, rode the whole TAT last year 7k + in one ride with it the way it is, but it sure did lead to some agrivation along the way.

Resetting adaptations seems like a solid approach—hope it resolves the issue for you! Curious to hear if pairing wheel speed with gear settings helps in the long run.

Well, reset all the adaptations…….had high hopes…..but unfortunately the problem is still present  :( :(

Back to the drawing board. Wondering if anyone knows a shop proficient at reprogrammiing BMW ECU’s. Needs to be someone that really understands the code. I beleive nulling out the wheels speed vs RPM check will fix the problem. May have a negative impact on traction control, but honestly speaking, I rarely want it…..often time when it does kick in, I wish it was not there. I ‘d rather handle that on my own using my right hand and clutch.

It might be worth putting the oem gearing back in and riding it to make sure the problem is for sure due to the gearing change.
Also there is a setting that I found for a F700 GS but I don't know if it will come up for your bike, it was in:

Engine Controller / Service Functions / Online Service Functions / BMSK Configurations / Configurations
Then chose from the Wheel Radius drop down menu.

Also:
Vehicle Electronics / Service Functions / Online Service Functions / ZFE Configurations / Configuration
Then choose from the Wheel Circumference drop down menu.
