Advice required wrt a GS911 equivalent for a KTM 1190 R
« on: August 09, 2023, 06:09:25 PM »
Hi all, I'm looking for some help / advice.

Whilst I've (still) got my 2012 R1200 GS Adventure (Triple Black) plus a Hexcode GS911 unit to go with it (and very useful that latter unit has proved too), I've also got a KTM 1190 Adventure R (and, yes I know, I've just committed a veritable 'heresy from the dark-side' what with admitting to owning one of those orange monsters... uhm, there really should be a AA type of group for such admissions, e.g. "Hi, my name is Tony and I'm a KTM rider" followed by suitably admonishing looks of absolute horror & disgust from the other attendees in the group)...

Joking aside, I would dearly love to find an equivalent OBD unit for that KTM 1190 (i.e. something providing equivalent functionality as the GS911).

I've been all over the interweb and have come up with a number of possible units but none that inspire me with the same level of confidence in their ability as does the GS911.

So, (and I apologise in advance for my heresy, i.e. the mentioning of the orange dark-side, in a forum focussed upon BMW's) might I very politely inquire if any of the esteemed contributors within this forum have experience of an OBD unit that will work on a KTM 1190, i.e. in the same manner & to the same extent as a GS911 works on a BMW ?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts & suggestions.

Hi Tony

Thanks for the great jokes  ;D

We have a 1190 in house for our ezCAN testing, and although it's a great bike, all of our diagnostics have had to be done manually. The one nice thing is that you can actually see the fault descriptions on the dash, so helps with troubleshooting, but nothing that's remotely close to the GS-911 on the aftermarket section.

I've seen a few posts on KTM forums where guys list some apps that are basic OBD readers which can read fault codes from the ECU memory, but nothing that allows procedures like activating the ABS pump or similar commands. If you do find something, feel free to post it here! But I would suggest posting on either a broad KTM forum or the 1190 forum itself, as that's probably going to get you the best feedback.

We've also received requests for developing a similar diagnostic tool for KTM, but this is quite a large project to tackle. The development that has been done for GS-911 along with the continuous development that we're still doing, is 15 years and going, to get the same RND for a different model will take years at least.

Kind regards and safe travels
Ruan

Many thanks for taking the time to respond; it's much appreciated... and, fwiw, 'I hear ya' wrt the time required for R&D.

TuneECU is the app that is used on the KTMs.

You will need an adapter cable (available from Lonelec) to go from the KTM 6 pin diagnostic plug to normal OBDII.  From there you can use something like the OBDLink LX, connected to a smartphone running TuneECU.

Cable: https://www.lonelec.com/product/ktm-obd2-diagnostic-plug-adaptor-tune-ecu-obd2-reader/
OBDLink: https://www.obdlink.com/products/obdlink-lx/
TuneECU: https://tuneecu.net/TuneECU_En/android.html

Lonelec also does the OBD "Dongle", but haven't used it so cannot comment on it.  I know the OBDLink LX works, as that is what I use regularly.

An OBD unit you should consider is TuneECU. It is a free and open-source ECU diagnostic and tuning software that is compatible with a wide range of KTM motorcycles, including the 1190 Adventure R.

Clearly the AI bot lives on another universe as TuneECU does not support any KTMs
