Intermittent fault - side stand switch
« on: November 19, 2022, 05:57:47 PM »
I have a 2017 S1000RR race bike. We replaced the front loom (where the injectors join) due to an ongoing fault this year.
I have not ran the bike since, but now if I leave it for a few minutes it will show up and engine fault for an implausible signal from the side stand switch.
I clear it, and the bike will run and start several times no problem. Then I will start it again and the bike with show up the side stand fault switch.

Any suggestions? Thanks

I had a clutch fault on my k1600 for the longest time.  I traced to to the 2010-2016 (K1600GTL K48) Switch Clutch Dual Microphone Switch.  Not sure why it is named a microphone as it is actually just two mini micro switches that were glued together.  Of course BMW wanted $178 for the stupid thing.  I found the mini-micro switchs on alibaba for .69 cents each.  I glued them together and swapped out the bad switches located under the clutch handle.  Been working great for over two years now.  Somewhere on this I posted the part numbers.  I would suspect the kickstand has the same switch.  Try to get the waterproof microswitch.

The clutch switch is just a simple $2 mini-micro switch.  https://www.shopbmwmotorcycles.com/oem-parts/bmw-motorrad-dual-microphone-switch-61317690700?c=az0x   The side stand would be very similar.  You can buy them on ebay or alibaba for $2 ish.

here is the part number I used for my clutch switches:  5PCS CHERRY ZF micro switch DB2 DB2C-A1AA -A1LA -A1RB DC2 DC2C-A1AA -A1LA -A1RB -A1LC 10A 250V NEW and ORIGINAL   Keep in mind they do not have the fancy BMW connector.  I just cut the bmw wires at the bad switch and soldered these switches in place.  Been working great for several months now.  They do have a water proof version but I can not remember the part number.  So far I have rode in rain and no issues.  https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832782994985.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.5a181802iu5TJ8&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US

FWIW, the BMW sidestand switch and clutch switches are completely different, and are not interchangeable.

This is what the sidestand switch looks like.  It is NOT a microswitch!

I would try bridging out the sidestand switch to see whether the issue persists.  If it does, then you have a fault elsewhere in the harness.  If the issue is resolved, you then have a choice to either just leave the switch bridged out (which creates a bit of a safety issue) or to replace it with a new one.

You can bridge it out by unplugging it and then shorting out these two pins on the harness side of the connector.

Thank Jughead.  I just assumed the kickstand switch would be the same microswitch.  It is goo to know I can bypass it when it goes out.Awesomesauce.  Can I pick your brain on a different issue please?  When I hit a pothole I get an "Adaptive Lighting" fault on my display. Looks like a spring symbo.  l https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.k1600forum.com%2Fthreads%2Ffault-message.108057%2F&psig=AOvVaw1ii_8BYgtQv1sR7GBrHKa9&ust=1684497976343000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CA0QjRxqFwoTCOj4mJPq_v4CFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD   I replaced the sensor located between the front wheel and the steering column.  It got better but still pops up on rough roads.

It would appear that this is another typical AI response from Victorpatrick, just like all his others.
