gear position re adaptation

Hey  just a question before i begin...does engine need to be at operating temp or at certain rpm to do the gear adaptation or can be done in gear at idle rpm on  bike stand?

At idle on the main stand.  Sometimes it help to apply a small amount of pressure to the rear brake pedal just to absorb the freeplay/backlash of the final drive.
