Had a question on the mailing list last week, thought I'd post the answer here for future reference.

Some fault codes refer to Cylinder 1 or Cylinder 2 (or 3,4 on other bikes).

Cylinder 1 is on the right hand side as you sit on the bike.

If you're talking about an R-Series... but what about the other series (yes, yes.. we can leave the singles out of this discussion)...  :P

...but let's get the answer for the older (and newer) K series, Parallel twins, Scooters, and S1000RR too...

BTW, on the R-series it's easy to test.. just unplug the idle actuator, and switch the ignition on and see whether Idle Actuator for Cylinder 1 or 2 is noted as faulty...

for the other bikes (that don't have Idles actuators per cylinder), I would suggest unplugging the electrical connection to a cylinder, then trying to start it, and then reading the fault codes... noting whether the fault codes states Cylinder 1, 2, 3 or 4 (or 5 or 6 for the K16)

For the "old" K-engines (the flat ones), cylinder 1 in the one closest to the front wheel.
