Title: Connecting to desktop PC
Post by: tony_voorn on December 06, 2013, 05:48:05 AM
Hello,

I have decided that I want to purchase a GS-911 to start doing my own maintenance on my '12 R1200RT.  I want the version that connects to a PC, since, as I understand it, the Mobile version cannot reset the service reminder.  I do not currently own a laptop PC.  Is it possible to connect to my desktop PC which is approximately 40 feet from my motorcycle?  I looked through the FAQ and searched in the forum and could not find an answer to this question.

Thanks,
Tony Van Der Voorn

hi Tony

it can be done but is a little impractical....

There are two ways:
1. you can use an Active USB extension cable. (Active cables have to be used in 5m and longer)
2. make a bluetooth connection between PC and GS-911 (my preference)

best
Stephan

I am not sure Stephans suggestion, to use bluetooth will work.
IF the PC is in the same room as the bike: YES!

If the PC is in another room the walls can block the bluetooth signal.
If your PC is old, make sure it HAS bluetooth.
If it does not you must buy a bluetooth "device"- a USB Bluetooth adapter is usually VERY cheap and easy to set up.

Won't a bluetooth connection require the use of the mobile app with only emergency usefulness?

What Stephan is referring to is setting up Bluetooth on your PC so it creates a virtual comm port. You can then use this from the PC app to diagnose from the PC over a Bluetooth connection.
