GS-911 won't read ECU. 2002 F650GS/Dakar
(1/1)
doc47:
The bike turns over but won't start. It fired up for 2-3 cycles then went back to turning over without starting.
Twice, it backfired through the throttle body. (Timing chain problem?)
I've cleaned the throttle body, including the idle circuit.
GS-911: will not read fault codes. I get the screen indicating it simply isn't connecting with the ECU. ("Kill switch is off. Key not turned on., etc.")
It must have spark or it wouldn't have fired. It is getting fuel.
What other information should I post?
What suggestions do you have?

So everyone understands, you have 2 650 singles, on one you can use the GS911 & can communicate with both BMSC's when fitted to that bike, neither BMSC communicates when fitted to this bike so you have a wiring issue on this bike, we have had many emails on the subject, do output testing on this BMSC by fitting it to the other bike

Thanks, Wayne. I know you must be sick of the whole thing. Unfortunately, the GS is in The Gambia with a flat tire I can't fix. I'm waiting for inner tubes to come from the UK next Wed. So, doing that will have to wait until I get the GS home.
When you say output testing, do you mean autoscan, reading fault codes, etc.? We did that a few times. If output testing means something else, please explain it to me.
Why would the machine backfire through the throttle body? Is that simply because the ECU isn't in control and things are uncoordinated?
And, lastly, we did determine there is power to the ECU. (Pin 3? I don't quite remember which.)
That powers the ECU. How does the ECU interact with the machine? I presume through other wires in the harness.
I have searched the Hex website. I can not find instructions or a video on how to test things on the bike with the GS-911. You suggest checking the injector. I can't find anything on the Hex website that gives those instructions. I would also like to test the fan on my GS, once I get it back. Are there instructions on the Hex website how to turn the fan off and on?
WayneC:
The "backfire" through the throttle body is merely ignition of unburned fuel so dont dwell on that
Output tests ofr all the components is in Service Function menu of the GS911 software/firmware, you get to it either via clicking on the BMSC heading of an AutoScan or "Detected Model" plus via the model menu
You will not find any instructions on the Hex web site re navigating through GS911 menu, it is all on screen in front of you either through browser or PC App
None of the above is relevant though until you sort out why there is no communications between the diagnostics socket & the BMSC on this bike, it all wotks on the other bike
One aspect though is have you updated firmware in the GS911 or updated the PC App recently ?, if not then you should do so as there was an update to improve the initial connection screen for the K1X models like the 650GS
