2009 R1200RT Heated Grips

<< < (2/2)

Jughead:
Just for interests sake ...

Many of the bikes will disable the heated grips, starting with the left one, when the battery gives issues.  I have personally experienced this on a road trip on the F800GS.

First the left heated grip stops working.  Ran diagnostics in the next town we stopped at and left heated grip had an error.
About 150km later, the right grip failed.  Ran diagnostics again, which reported both left and right grips faulty.

200km later the bike died completely.  Turning on the ignition would light up the instrument cluster, but as soon as the happy button was pressed, everything would die.

Turned out to be a dead stator coil, and as the voltage in the battery dropped, the system started turning off what it deems to be unnecessary.  Replaced the stator, got the battery charged and all was good again.

as mentioned, lots of diagnostic messages can turn up with a low battery.

another cause is the wires to the grip heater regularly fall off - plenty of repair videos for current style BM heated grips on youtube.  So you might have a dickey wire
