F650GS Single Spark 2002
« on: July 24, 2020, 10:50:40 PM »
I recently acquired a 2002 F650GS single spark without ABS
I am using a 2nd generation USB 911 with a connecting cable purchased from Hexcode, running the 911 on my pc laptop running windows 10.
When I select my model I get a strange message:

Failed to read controller info: no response from controller, check that the: ignition is on, kill switch in run position, neutral selected and immobilizer deactivated if fitted  - do you wish to continue?  Press yes if you do.

I have ignition on, kill switch is in run, neutral selected and no immobilizer.  I press yes and get the normal screen showing Engine, ABS and Autoscan on the left hand side but I do not have ABS on this bike.

When selecting Engine it seems to show all the options I expect and when selecting ABS I get no info received from the controller this seems correct as no ABS is fitted.

When running an Autoscan I get some strange results, Autoscan below:

AutoScan Report
GS-911 version: 2004.1 Datapack version: 14.8
Serial Number: GS2 000 757
Firmware version: 0.253-0.157 Datapack version: 0.0

Motorcycle Information

VIN : WB10172A01ZE40521
Bike model : F 650 GS (R13)
Mileage : Not available

BMS-C
ECU Id (VIN): ZH80617
Controller Type: Engine Controller
Part No.: 07668133
HW Version: C2
Diagnosis Index: 4
Software version: 8000
Manufacturing Date: 2000-08-24
HWOE No.: 61349437
Manufacturer: Hella GmbH
Data release: 80003608
VIN model year: 2001

No fault codes found

What confuses me here is the VIN number is not correct, mileage not available?
The ECU id (Vin) shown is correct from my Vin number
The  Vin model year is 2001 while my bike is a 2002 model.
I have checked the Vin plate against the stamped number and they match also it matches with my registration document (V5C in the UK).

Sorry if this post is a bit garbled but I hope someone can help me start to make sense of it.

Cheers

Paul

Putting the last seven digits of your VIN into a parts list site, gives a manufacture date of October 2000, which would make it a 2001 model year. The BMW model year starts after the summer break not in January.

Thanks for the reply Mike.
I say it is a 2002 bike because the age identifier on my UK plate is 02.
What seven digits did you use and can I ask where to find the parts list site?
Am I correct in assuming the seven digits you used are the same as for the ECU id.

Paul

P.S. just put the ECU id 7 digits into Realoem and it gives me a production date of January 2002 which seems correct for my plate.

Hi Paul,

I used a similar site (MAXBMW) and used the last seven digits of the bike VIN, which starts with WB, not the ECU VIN

The bike VIN should be as on your V5C (I'm in the UK as well).

The vin starting with WB is not the correct one while the ECU id is correct for my bike.
The vin plate on the bike is the same as the stamped number on the headstock and also on my V5C.

Well at least it's the same as on your frame and V5C. Don't know why the 'Motorcycle Information' VIN  is different.

First I would suggest you update the PC App to 2004.3 which was released recently, the banner on the forum is out of date

Re the message

"Failed to read controller info: no response from controller, check that the: ignition is on, kill switch in run position, neutral selected and immobilizer deactivated if fitted  - do you wish to continue?  Press yes if you do."

It is normal with the 650GS as it is only 3 wire to the diags socket, there is no V-Ignition pin for GS911 to detect Ignition is on

The VIN mismatch is indicating to you that the BMSC is a replacement which came from another bike & fitted to your bike then reprogrammed with the later firmware & VIN, note the BMSC Manufacturing Date is 24/8/2000, normally there was only a small difference in date between when the bike was assembled & the BMSC manufactured

The ZE40521 VIN shows 2000/10 production date which is the 2nd indicator the BMSC was initially in a previous year model

Basically the GS911 is grabbing the full VIN & VIN Id from 2 different records in the BMSC, log a ticket with Hexcode so they are aware of the issue being in 2004.1, that surprises me as there was some work to resolve it last year

FYI, when an ECU is programmed by BMW Dealer Software a record of the programming is stored in a history record area of the ECU EEPROM, it is a quirk of these early ECU's with no EWS that they can be reprogrammed to a different VIN, dont be concerned, the BMSC will perform properly

Hi Wayne
Thanks for the reply.
I have updated to 2004.3 only after I read your helpful tip about doing it with the Download utility (had the same problem as the other person on the forum).
After updating I still get the Vin mismatch in my Autoscan is this something particular to the GS911 or is it something that can be resolved by having a software update?
I did notice that the 911 was giving me the correct screens and let me reset all adaptations and do some output testing so if I do not need to spend anything else that would be good.
I guess an update at the dealers would be the best part of £30!!
Many thanks
Paul

Paul

Interesting the failure to update without using the downloader, I had not encountered it

Yes it is GS911 specific of getting the 2 different VIN values from different records in the BMSC, the GS911 makes the first request to the BMSC & gets the wrong VIN then makes the 2nd request & gets the full current record

The mileage for 650GS is only held in the Dash & there is no data comms to the dash so diagnostics cant retrieve it, that applies to the BMW Dealer System as well, the BMW system prompts the Dealer to enter the mileage manually so it appears on the reports

There is perhaps no need to go to a Dealer if the bike runs well, the Autoscan shows you are on Data release: 80003608, that is the latest, the 8000 is the Program Version which was the last version, 3608 is the Data Version & means Old Injector 156026 & RON 95

I should have checked that before, it suggests the Dealer did not check which Injector was fitted at the time of reprogramming or selected the wrong choice, check if your injector is black (new one) or grey (old one), the Bosch Part No is also on the Injector, the new one is 0 280 155 788

I find the RON 95 programming is better here in Oz these days, it handles E10 fuel well, my other BMSC with RON91 firmware I originally used in our arid country areas was better back then as in some little country towns the only fuel was RON 91

Just had a reply from Ruan at Hexcode stating that they did know of this problem but it was a little way down on their to do list.
I will keep an eye out on future updates and hopefully see the solution soonish!!

Hi Wayne
Checked the colour of the injector and I have the grey one.
If I change to the new type does it then need an upgrade.  The bike is running ok but it could be something for the future.
Cheers

Paul,

The firmware version matches the physical injector fitted so all is good to leave it alone, it is odd that a 2002 would have the old injector.

In 2000/2001 the old injector was the STD injector fitted in production, they had problems with surging & stalling with 6000/7000 series firmware & the solution was 8000 series firmware plus replacement of old injector with the new one but had firmware in the Dealer programming to handle both injectors. that is the first 2002 model I have heard of with an old injector, they changed production to be fitting the new injector by 2002
