How to log realtime values while driving ?
« on: July 30, 2013, 04:57:37 PM »
Hello,

I've got a K13GT with some idling problems. I suspect the O2 sensor but I'm not sure. The dealer is still looking for the cause also without luck. As their latest diagnostic gear is not finding any fault, they are clueless. It does not even plot the O2 sensor values but costs in the ten of thousands! This is a joke. I ask them if working like this is not frustrating (following what the Computer says). Where are their experiences as tech put at use ? Anyway, this is another story  ::)

I think of saving the real time values of the engine while I drive but don't know the preferred way! I don't see myself with the laptop connected and riding  :o

Thanks for your suggestions

Issa

hi Issa,

I normally do it on my mobile (I have an Android phone - any Android device will do, as well as Windows Mobile 5 & 6 devices, Blackberries and other Java based mobile phones)... I then connect the GS-911, make the connection to my phone, select the engine, select the realtime values (at this point you will see them) - then select options/menu -> log values (or start logging or something like that...) once done, I normally just send them to the server (once uploaded you get a link where you can view or download them as CSV) ...then I put Excel to god use...

alternatively I know of a number of people who use there little netbooks to do this... you just need to configure the netbook itself that is does not go to sleep when you close the lid) - then pop it into a backpack and off you go...

best,
Stephan

What Stephan say-
I have a OLD cellphone- so I use a laptop instead.
The laptop strapped to my tankbag. (not on rainy days)

" I don't see myself with the laptop connected and riding"

Why not? You will do so for testing. Just find a low traffic area and time.   :)
Just use tape or string to make sure the USB wire stay in place.

Ok, will try the phone way then.

too much afraid of breaking beloved laptop while riding  ;D

Also as the bike's idling trouble is not showing up every time I ride, I will need to log a lot...

Thx

Hi Stephan,

I've followed your instructions and started the logging but I cannot find the file afterwards on the phone (using java version of GS911Mobile on a Nokia).
Can you tell me where GS911Mobile stores the log file ?

Thx

depending what phone you have, your phone might not have an accessible Filesystem... hence the Options->Upload.. which sends the data to our server and gives you a link afterwards.. (after the upload) to get to it... then you can download the CSV file from there...

:o err, sorry but cannot find this Options->Upload menu. Tried in every screen (realtime values, Select values to show, Select function, Select controller, Select model, Select series)

it's not in any of the screens... under the Menu (that is your phone's menu button/options button), that will bring up the options like "Test" and one of them is "upload logs"

Ok, it has something to do with the OS of the Nokia 700 (Nokia Belle)

It happens that I have a C1 http://developer.nokia.com/Devices/Device_specifications/C1-02/ (Series 40 6th Edition Lite) and so far so good, I installed GS911Mobile on it without problem and I can see the menus you were talking about. I will try to connect it to the GS911 and see if I can get the log file of real time values.

The funny thing is that the Nokia 700 is pricier and more powerful than the C1, except that it cannot show java apps very well!!!

Thx,

We use a car with a driver and passenger, using a laptop and a Class 1 (= range of 100 meters, max) USB Bluetooth dongle to follow the bike during the test-ride.
It does not mean you can use effectively a range of a 100 meters, but we stick the USB Bluetooth dongle to the windscreen of the car and it does a pretty good job most of the time.

Yes, we Dutch are odd, I know. Sorry!

Wooden shoes and living under sea level :-))
Why not use a tankbag with a small netbook or tiny laptop?
I usually use a tiny laptop and a USB connection.
(I have the USB wire permanently "installed", with the PC loose end under the saddle)
On a "customer" bike that is not practical tho.
2 strips of tape will keep the wire safe- OR use the bluetooth connection.
One of the many strap on tankbags will do well.
Seems (to me) its problems to use a second vehicle.... :)

 ;D

Whilst I fully agree your suggestion is a much easier solution, at times we have bikes with odd problems that only examination of the realtime values during the ride we get clues what the possible issue might be.
With the follow-car we can observe it all during the ride and give instructions what to do or try to induce.
Rather then stopping, taking the gloves off, opening the tankbag, examining what has been sampled so far, make an on the spot decision what to do next, closing the tankbag, putting the gloves back on and continue riding.

Surely- I see the obvious reasons you tell!  :D
(For me it would be easier to make a stationary test "road" than find people to help me when I need it  ;D
