O2 Sensor

Hi all,
I have a 2004 R1200C which I have just finished restoring. The bike was originally from Texas and was a bit scraped up cosmetically

The bike is finally on the road, but I have some concerns with performance. I realise the R1200C's are not the fastest bike of the BMW range but this one seems quite sluggish.

I get two faults coming up related to the O2 sensor after taking it for a ride, I swapped out the existing O2 sensor with another used one (maybe faulty also), the fault codes are as follows:
304- Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Circuit Malfunction
Short circuit to earth
The fault is present now
The fault occurred 62 times

4400 - Lambda Control - Upper Control Limit Reached
The fault is not present now
The fault occurred 51 times

So, do I buy a new sensor, or buy a Techlusion system which doesn't use an O2 sensor, or has anyone seen this fault before and is there a simple fix

Before I swapped out the previous O2 sensor it was surging - when the surge cut in, the bike was off like a rabbit, after changing the O2 sensor to the other one I had it still gets up to 80kmh reasonably well but should do it much faster. There are new spark plugs (Iridium), new air filter, fuel filter, fresh fuel, and no other faults showing on the GS911

Any help or assistance would be appreciated.

Autoscan below - interestingly, I disconnected the O2 sensor and took the 1200C for a ride - the performance was great until it warmed up then it went back to being sluggish.GS911 then said the O2 sensor was implausible

I have seen this before and it resulted in having to put in new lamdas {02 sensors}
something you can try on the gs911 is have a look what the o2 sensors are doing in real time values

Thanks Bike Crazy, I was thinking along the same lines. When I watch the O2 centre graphing on the GS911, it drops way down below the lean area of the graph, and  so appears to be very lean, although taking out the plugs they appear a bit wet and sooty. The Bosch 15727 is apparently the equivalent universal O2 sensor for BMW motorcycles and relatively cheap in comparison to the genuine part.

I'll get one of those and give it a go, and it will at least eliminate the O2 sensor from the equation

if it drops down low, the mixture is lean... see the little writeup i did in 2010:

for the short circuit I would be looking at a wiring issue...  the other issue might be the sensor, or might be the mixture.. (i.e. fuel starvation or excess air ( to make it lean) - could be air leaks etc...

Hi Sparra,

yes I bought the Bosch universal O2 sensor, spliced it onto the cable with plug on it and it worked perfectly.

I did have a wiring fault between the socket and the ECU which is why I thought it was the sensor (sensor was dud though) - but a bit of jiggling of the cable removed the short and some cable ties to hold the cables in place and its all good again.

The sensor comes with a splice box - I used it but then removed it and used common insulated crimp lugs and some heat shrink - awesome!!

Thanks for your response. I should check for an earthed wire before purchasing a sensor as the bike has only done 40,000 kilometres.

Hi Sparta, if you suspect the O2 sensor is at fault there is a procedure to test it. Go to "www.chrome heads.org" and use the search function - there is a lot of useful information there. Regards Dave
