First brake bleed with GS-911
« on: August 31, 2016, 11:25:26 PM »
Well, it was time for my annual brake flush and bleed.  The first time did it at around 17,000 miles when I changed the brake pads, but did not have the GS-911 yet or maybe that function was not available without using the PC software, I don't remember.  Anyway, I now have about 25,000 miles on the bike and its 18 months since the last bleed.  I used castrol LMA last time, which is pretty much what it came with from the factory.  This time I used ATE Type 200 as the Super Blue is now forbidden by the US DOT only because of the color.  The Type 200 is the same stuff but color compliant.  Brake fluid can only be clear or Amber to be DOT approved.  The ATE fluid has a higher wet boiling point than the dry of the Castrol.  Anyway, back on topic.  The ABS bleed function worked great.  It was easy to follow.  Although I had to hook up a charger to the battery as it dipped below 12 volts when the ABS pump kicked in.  I ran it then bled the brakes and then repeated a 2nd time.  The GS-911 was an expensive tool when I got it, but each time I use it, it becomes more economical to own due to not paying dealer fees.  I also got it configured to connect to my phone via the hotspot function.  That way I can use all the cloud functions as long as I have cell signal.  That makes the reservations I have about tying the device to a server on the internet almost a non issue.  I say almost because if your server goes down then I lose the cloud functions.  But so far it's been a great buy and I've never used it connected to a PC and don't intend to.  Keep up the good work.

Bleeding the brakes is a task that I will face soon. Were there any difficulties or do you have any hints to make the job easier?

Well, my bike is a 2014 K1300S.  I don't know what bike you have.  Refer to the service DVD if you have a different bike.  I strongly suggest getting someone to help as you unless you are Stretch Armstrong.

If you are mechanically inclined and have experience doing brake bleed/flushing then it is easy, you can do it solo no problem. I use Pentosin Dot 4 LV.

Thank you. I've done my R1150RT and several others so I shouldn't have any trouble with the GSW.
