K1300S adaptive values

Can some one explain to me the meaning of the "adaptive values" what they do and what for, and situations when should i reset it? Thanks =)

adaption values is the self teaching system which trims or rich ens the fuel system to get the ideal mixtures in different environments and fuel quality

i normally reset the adaption values if there is a irregular idle ,gear transducer  is not showing the gear you driving in and on a major service but then again its only me.
