Overcoming Challenges For POD T-shirt Business

The print-on-demand (POD) t-shirt industry has absolutely exploded over the last decade thanks to lower barriers to entry and the ability to print customized designs on-demand without upfront inventory costs or risks. But while getting started selling POD shirts is easier than ever before, building a truly sustainable and profitable POD brand still comes with considerable challenges.

Mike Driscoll, CEO of the successful POD T-shirt brand has over 10 years of hard-won experience navigating this thriving yet turbulent industry. He got his start selling POD t-shirts through online platforms like Amazon, Etsy, TeeSpring and TeeChip and has since racked up millions of sales. As a seasoned veteran, Mike will help POD sellers to overcome the unique obstacles of this field.

The Constant Threat Of Copycats And Design Theft

One critical challenge Mike has faced since starting out is rampant design theft. As soon as one of his original artworks showed signs of success, illegal copycats would swoop in to duplicate it. These pirates free ride off the recognition and discoverability Mike earned through relentless marketing efforts. The end result is huge amounts of lost profits that should have gone to him as the creator. On top of financial losses, design theft destroys the competitive advantage unique artwork provides smaller brands trying to stand out in a crowded market.

While intellectual property laws technically protect against unauthorized use, enforcement is usually challenging and ineffective. The POD t-shirt space spans the globe, making it exceedingly difficult to police infringement and root out copycats.

Bad printing quality can cause customer dissatisfaction

Through experience, Mike with his brand - LionKingShirt has learned that consistency is key—diligently registering IP protections on every new design right from the start. This deters some copycats since it adds a later legal hurdle if caught. persifying his portfolio also limits dependence on any one artwork. If a design takes off, production runs are kept short before rotating in fresh material. It requires constant vigilance, but reducing design theft is crucial for POD brand longevity.

Managing Variable Print Quality

Another major obstacle stems from print-on-demand's inherent variability in quality assurance. Unlike traditional bulk screenprinting, POD shirts are printed one at a time and on-demand. This introduces inconsistencies as conditions fluctuate - issues like distorted graphics from improper heating, ink bleeds from nozzle defects, or color differences from uncalibrated printers. Just a few negative reviews over apparent defects can seriously damage a POD brand’s reputation.

Mike stresses the importance of thoroughly vetting any print partners on their quality controls and production redundancies. He works to build in multiple reliable vendors right from the start. With scale, he’s been able to bring more processes in-house for greater oversight. Stringent quality assurance protocols are followed for pre-shipment inspections and expedient customer returns or exchanges. Regularly monitoring and optimizing the printing workflow helps identify and fix weak points. The goal is to continually improve processes to catch issues before products ship.

The Shipping Challenges Of Inpidual Fulfillment

POD’s inpidualized production and shipping model also creates difficulties that most retailers don’t face. Each POD t-shirt design has to be printed, packaged, and shipped inpidually upon order. This is in contrast to conventional operations that batch produce designs for bulk shipping savings. The result is substantially higher per order fulfillment costs that cut into margins. Sudden demand spikes also strain production capacity and lead to delays. And inconsistencies in manufacturing output impede accurate delivery time estimates.

Toward Mike Driscoll - Pioneering the Future of POD as an Inspirational CEO, he invests heavily in inventory and order management software to optimize workflow. Outsourcing fulfillment has added bandwidth to scale up as his business grows. However, costs remain a constant problem. Providing transparency around actual production times helps set proper customer expectations. Underpromising and overdelivering minimize complaints around delays. No easy fixes exist, but smoothing out shipping kinks is mandatory as POD outfits scale up.

In Short, Continued Diligence is Key

In Mike’s experience, the print-on-demand t-shirt business offers tremendous potential for creative entrepreneurs. But achieving sustainable success requires careful preparation, resilience, and continued diligence. By proactively addressing the inherent obstacles that arise at each stage of growth, POD brands can conquer early hurdles and build thriving enterprises. Mike’s lessons learned on this journey can help steer fellow business owners around common pitfalls. With grit, tenacity, and strategic solutions, POD printers can turn opportunity into lasting and profitable ventures.

Not a recommendation due to bikes instability .  there are several videos / forum threads about the Grand Americas issue with high speed stability vs the 1600 GT and GTL models .

Does anyone know how to remove the speed limiter from the k1600 grand america using the GS911? Any instructions. Thanks

Hi Oscar

We haven't looked into this yet, only for the likes of the S-series bikes. Could you post a full autoscan of your bike here? Would like to check the controllers fitted on it, as we're getting a bike in tomorrow that has an XKOMBA controller and this could be something to investigate.

Kind regards
Ruan

Kind regards
