OBD II Protocol?

My friend just popped over with his new R1250 RT and he was looking for the diagnostic connector. I mentioned that BMW motorcycles have gone to a OBD II connector within the last year or so.

My 2016 GSA LC still uses the round non-standard connector, so I wondered what protocol BMW is using now with the OBD II connectors?

Just as cars have an OBD II protocol  (ISO 9141, ISO 15765, etc), what protocol does the BMW OBD II use for its motorcycles?

I am not talking about the GS-911 software version.

   That's what I thought, when I read your post. 

The EOBD diagnostic connection is standardized.
Data format according to DIN ISO 9141-2 or SAE J 1850.
Since 2005, the CAN is also standardized.

For that reason, it will also be possible to read and delete
exhaust relevant errors of the 1250 engine control.

Well based on the OBD II connector, it looks like my friend's 2019 R1250 RT uses the ISO 15765 (CAN), that is if it isn't some weird BMW-only protocol. It has pins in 4, 5, 6, 14 and 16.

Yes the 2019 models are EU4 mandated so they use CAN Diag as per the OBDII/EU spec, as always though there are many tests etc in the " Manufacturer Extensions" allowed for in the specs & these are often the diagnostics routines that are the most useful, you will need the 10pin to 16pin adaptor to plug into the 2019 model, dont purchase the cheap EBay adaptors, they break up rather quickly, get the Hexcode adaptor

This is for my friend's 2019 R1250 RT. He has the yellow GS911. Will that older GS911 work and if so, will the adapter to 16 pin OBD II work with it?

My 2016 R1200 GSA LC works with my WiFi GS911 (Red/Black unit).

No.

This older yellow one will not communicate with this 2019th bike.
They uses pin 6+14 CAN connectors high and low and in addition the LIN bus.
Please use the new red one interface

The Yellow GS911 is OBDII K-Line protocol only where the new red GS911 WiFi is both K-Line & CAN-Diag with different pins for each protocol
