Starter relay driver - fault code 10233
« on: March 07, 2018, 07:14:21 PM »
Hi. I've a 1200GS in the workshop showing fault code 02133, starter relay driver.
Engine wouldn't turn over when starter button pressed.
Bypass the starter button and jump the relay terminals and it starts ok everytime.

Cleared the faults and it now starts on the starter button, but same fault  code "02133 starter relay driver" has shown up again as currently present but bike is now starting ok.

Anyone else had a starter relay driver fault ?

thanks
Neil

Hi Steptoe.

I would replace the starter relay.  I have had a few that have had badly burnt contacts.  I assume it causes the system to draw a higher current than it should, thus generating the fault codes.

It is the green relay under the front seat that causes the issue.

Relay is new, as is starter motor and battery.

The owner replaced the parts he thought maybe causing the problem.

Not sure what is meant by the terminology "starter relay driver" in the fault description.
Perhaps it's the starter switch ?
Is there a list of fault code numbers and their meaning on the forum ?

Not sure what the error code is referring to either.

Maybe just clear the error and monitor it to see whether it reoccurs.  Could be an old code from before the starter and relay was replaced.

WRT a list of error codes, I am not aware of any such list.  I have started compiling my own list of codes with the associated descriptions and fixes.  Will share it here when it is a little more substantial.

It's not an old error code. I clear them each time.
It's been messing about again today. Turns over on the button a few times, then nothing, and then all ok again. Starter switch gear all ok.
Keeps throwing up the same error code and how many times it's happened since i last cleared it.

I'm suspecting it's the ecu unit.
It's a customers bike, a 2006 model and has done 85K miles of hard riding.

When you turn the ignition on, is there a delay before the instrument cluster wakes up?

I ended up bypassing the ecu, and the starter now works perfectly.
